Lead VUI Designer of the BMW Group’s Intelligent Personal Assistant

Connect with Lisa:

My name is Lisa and I am the lead voice user interface designer of the BMW Group’s Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Since my studies of psychology, including industrial and organizational psychology, complex technological systems and the ways they interact with humans fascinate me.

As a degree candidate at Siemens AG, I already had the great chance to explore user interface design as well as user experience research for specialist users in complex domains during my studies.

The challenges of creating an excellent user interface for systems with a high complexity, such as highway or building monitoring, strengthened my enthusiasm for this innovative field.

This led me to a research position at Airbus Group Innovations, where I was able to explore ‘Adaptive Task Allocation in Complex Human-Machine Systems’ within an EU project.

Then I got the fantastic opportunity to start a dissertation at BMW Group. Based on the worldwide largest naturalistic driving data set SHRP2, I analyzed effects of cognitive distraction on driving performance to derive requirements and best practices for user interface design of a cockpit. I loved working in this field and soon realized the vast possibilities and chances of using voice control in the car!

Today, I use my knowledge of psychology and driver distraction to design both great and safe voice control experiences for all BMWs including the Intelligent Personal Assistant worldwide. It gives me great pleasure to see how sophisticated dialogs, accounting for diverse situations both inside and outside the car, increase the driving pleasure of so many people.

Improving the interaction with complex technological systems in the best way possible – across disciplines and country borders – is still my biggest motivation and I’m really excited about all the new technologies and possibilities that are still to come in our future!

Having said this, I couldn’t be happier to explore the current VUI challenges as well as everything to come within the truly inspiring network Women in Voice, that I’m very proud to be a part of! Thank you for globally connecting so many talented people, working in this amazing field in these very exciting times!
